Break the smoking habit

Nobody has to smoke, it is a matter of personal choice. However once smoking becomes a habit, your ability to make that choice is severely restricted. But kick the habit and it will be possible for you to stop smoking quickly, easily and permanently.

So what is a habit

A habit is a learned pattern of behaviour, an action performed so often that it become an automatic response, something you do without thinking.

As a smoker your habit means that certain situations such as stress or boredom will trigger an automatic desire to smoke. And this urge is so strong it it almost impossible for you to resist. It creates a mental block which stops all rational thought and your only option is to satisfy the
craving created by the habit.

What happens in you don’t break the habit

If you don’t kick your habit BEFORE you stop smoking your chances of success are severely limited and you will endure days, weeks, months or even years of misery as you continue to
deprive yourself.

This is because your habit will continue to set up automatic responses which produce cravings so strong that at some stage your ability to resist will weaken and you will start smoking again.

This explains why so many smokers fail to give up smoking by using nicotine replacement products such as patches, gums or inhalators. These products are designed purely to deal with the physical withdrawal from nicotine and should therefore only be used AFTER you have broken the habit,
not before.

Ultimately the battle to stop smoking is won or lost in your head and it is your responsibility to do everything you can to mentally prepare yourself by breaking the habit before you smoke your last cigarette. Remember if you fail to prepare then be prepared to fail.

So how can you break a habit

Approached in the correct way it is relatively simple to break the habits of a lifetime.

Firstly you have to bring the habit back to a conscious level allowing you to regain the ability to make a healthier choice. In short, you have to become aware of your actions each time you
perform them.

Once at a conscious level the choices that support your habit can be re-examined.

You become increasingly aware of the consequences of your actions.

Your habit is no longer something you do without thinking.

It becomes impossible for you to continue without considering your choices.

And as smoking doesn’t make sense, the natural choice is to stop.
